When I was visiting A, we went to a place on Hardware Lane in Melbourne, A has lived around Melbourne for years and just hadn't ever found it. I actually found it in a travel book I found at the Visitor Center at Fed Square--it was titled something like "Melbourne Insider's Guide" anyhow. The place was called Vialetto http://www.vialetto.com.au/main.php
A and I booked reservations and walked down town, had the best seat in the house, exceptional service, delicious food, wonderful sticky date pudding for dessert, it was about $70AUS for the two of us, well worth it, we will go back. Hardware Lane also has live Jazz in the streets on the weekends. If you don't book reservations you can just go down hardware lane and be approached by one of the many restaurants hoping for your business, we might have gone to another place nearby if we didn't already have reservations, we were offered free wine, free dessert and other such things as we strolled past several other places.

Ssam Korean BBQ, Newtown, Sydney.

Boy took me for my birthday. You sit around a bucket of coals and fire and cook your own meat, with plenty of veggies to enjoy.

If anyone in Sydney is craving pizza, I highly recommend Lucio's in Darlinghurst.

http://www.eatability.com.au/au/sydney/lucio-pizzeria/

I spent enough time living in Brooklyn to develop a serious pizza snobbery, and I can happily vouch for this place. We've eaten there a few times and have loved it every time. Try the half and half pizza (margarita pizza baked over a ricotta filled half ... mmmmm).

(Also, for those so inclined, the mostly Italian dude waitstaff is all kinds of eye candy goodness, but I promise that has nothing to do with my love for their food ;-) ).

Thanks also for all the Mexican restaurant recommendations. Finding good pizza was our first mission, and now we're ready to tackle the Mexican food challenge.

This is my fave restaurant so far, so much so that we will be going for my birthday next month!

The absolute BEST fried garlic potatoes you will ever eat. The skewers are TDF, too. Locations in Petersham, Bella Vista, and Rose Bay is opening soon.

Part of Sydney's The Star (formerly Star City), Black is an American style steakhouse with a classical French influence. If you're out celebrating, this is the place. It is a little expensive, but about half the cost of other restaurants in this category. Modernized bar food is available at the lounge, and the main menu features the highest quality steaks Australia has to offer. Also available are fish, oysters, a chicken dish, and several tasty sides. The wine list is extensive and it includes many rare selections.

$$$$ Price
Type Steakhouse

Dinner Tues-Sun
Lunch Fri
Closed Mondays
Located in Pyrmont near Darling Harbor in The Star
Fantastic

Los Argentinos
14 Beach Street Frankston, VIC
http://www.losargentinos.com.au/#!menus/vstc1=main-menu

Their website is kinda crappy and for some reason it only shows a very small portion of the actual menu. The food was amazing and the closest thing to real mexican (yes I know its Argentinian food and not Mexican) I have found yet. All the meat is cooked over charcoal, none of that fake Taco Bill's junk. They also have some interesting foreign beers that my partner seemed to enjoy and the people that worked there are actually from Argentina. We didn't try it but apparently the 'thing' to get is a 5 meat sampler, it comes on its own little charcoal grill to your table, the table next to us had it, looked pretty good!
