Does anyone have any insight in where to find black beans? I've looked at both Woolies and Coles and can't believe that I would need to go to a speciality Asian market to find some!! Thanks |

Some of the stalls in the markets such as Queen Vic and Prahran do sell a variety of dried beans here in Melbourne. I don't think I have seen canned ones here yet but I really haven't looked for them. Black beans are very common sight in Miami where I last lived and I ate a lot of them while living there. The Cuban people make them best. |

In Perth I buy them at a shop which sells all kinds of foreign foods (not just Asian), but that's not much use to you in NSW. |

Do you live near North Rocks, NSW? Featured from Food Safari on SBS: Mary Dias Foods (or Fireworks Foods) Unit 19, 16 Loyalty Road, North Rocks, NSW Tel: 02 98812 3233 Black Beans, etc. Hope this helps. And let me know if they're any good...cos I sure could use a good Mexican-fix myself!

I've online-ordered from Fireworks Foods and MaryCarmen in the past, they are wonderful! I can find dried black beans here in Perth in several whole foods and organic shops, and have seen canned ones in smaller markets, specifically one that carries only Western Australia produce, but has quite a few specialty products. Keep looking! Lisa |

I've seen Amy's Organics brand canned black beans in a few organic grocers around Melbourne. They're an import from the US, though, and they're NOT cheap -- about $4 a can. Don't know if you might find them in similar shops in NSW. Good luck!

I get mine from a silly little Indian spice stall located in front of the IGA in Crow's Nest. Found that on a whim after visiting 6 stores in search of...silly me, why didn't I think to ask for "Turtle Beans" instead of "Black Beans"!! And as Kim mentioned, most organic food shops have them but they are shockingly expensive. |

I have been able to find cans of "asian black beans" in the Subiaco markets in WA, but they aren't the same as the canned black beans you'd get in the US. I just use dried, but it's a bit of a pain when you want some quick. |

I seriously gave up looking and had my mom bring me cans of Goya black beans when she came to visit in June. I still have two cans left and only use them for special occassions. I'm going to stock up again when I go for a visit in Sept (hopefully). |

They sell Goya black beans at Norton St Grocer in Bondi Junction. I think they were $2.90 a can, or somewhere along those lines. They also sell tomatillos which we were excited about! |

I had no idea this place existed-I work in the CBD so I know where I'm going on my lunch hour tomorrow! I've been getting my dried pinto beans from Aztecas in Randwick, they usually sell me a kilo for $5 or so. I don't remember if Azteca serves black beans on the menu, but if they do they will sell you the dried beans. Now if only I could locate some authentic salt pork.... |

Canned black beans are handy, but it sounds like they're pretty expensive in Australia. Cooked black beans freeze really well, so if you can find the dried black beans then you can cook up a big batch and freeze in 2-cup portions to use when you need them quickly. I make big batches of pinto, black, and navy beans (not mixed, separately!) and freeze them all the time. This way I'm able to control the amount of salt in the beans. Especially since Beef in black bean sauce is so popular in Oz!!!! I ended up finding dried black turtle beans from a gourmet distributor in Castle Hill called 'Dijon Foods'. They also stock real maple syrup and 1kg bags of pancake mix. |
