No worries, Tors. Happy to have some info to provide. Your last smilie is making me want a beer though... I ordered a paper copy of the new booklet a few days ago so I can mark it up: http://www.citizenship.gov.au/learn/cit_test/test_resource_book/ I'll try to post more on the process as I get into it. Would love to hear others' experiences as well. |

Yeah, thanks from me, too, Andrea! According to that, I've been eligible for several months already and didn't realize it. I got the new paper book when it was first issued last month, guess I'd better get reading it! (Nearly beer-time, isn't it?) Lis |

I became eligible (including being Australia in the 12 months prior) to apply a year ago October. I took the citizenship test about a week before (I'm pretty sure you can take the test far in advance of your exact eligibility - call to check) On the date I became eligible (mid-Oct), I submitted my application online and they give you a tracking # to keep tabs of the progress. I received notification 2 days before Christmas (just over 9 weeks of waiting for this part) that I was granted citizenship - but it would not be official until I attended the ceremony and to wait to be contacted. I was HOPING for Australia Day. I tried to call the council office to see when the ceremony might be, but was told to wait. My ceremony was in mid-May this year - 7 months after becoming eligible, 5 months after receiving the letter. I received the ceremony info letter about 2 weeks before my ceremony. The ceremony ended up being at the citizenship office in Parramatta not my local council. Getting a passport was alot quicker - it only took about 10 days for normal processing. |

Does anyone know which method of applying for citizenship gets processed faster? I'm trying to decide between online or the paper method. |

If it's anything like the rest of DIAC, the online application will go through faster, as it doesn't have to wait on some secretary's desk to get keyed in to the systems. That being said, I haven't done either, so it's all just a guess based on how DIAC works with 457 applications. I'd do it online personally. |

Just an update here from me: I applied for citizenship online on 7 Jan and received my letter two weeks later advising that I take the test in Melbourne CBD on 8 Feb...so fast!! The test is computer based - 20 questions and you have to get 15 correct. If you fail, you can re-take it. The letter says that after the test, most applications are finalised within 60 days unless there is a question of your identity. Will keep everyone posted on the outcome. Jennifer, how are you going with your application? Cheers, Andrea |

60 days...HA! Yeah, I wouldn't count on that number, mate. I've been told a minimum of 90 days, and they don't give you any sort of indication as to where in the processing stage you're at. I took the test and applied for mine on Halloween and I'm still waiting.

I knew that sounded too good to be true... I'd be interested to hear when you do receive it...could be soon...then there's the waiting for ceremony dates. Ah, Kim - yes, of course, how could I forget? |

So just an update: I took the citizenship test on Monday in Melbourne city and passed. Got my approval letter today! Lightening fast for DIAC. But the letter says it can take six months or more to get a ceremony date so I'm now in the holding period like everyone else. I'm in City of Melbourne council area so wonder if that means it will take longer or shorter. Would love to know when yours comes up, Dev... |
