Woohoo congrats dude! The initial application is probably the biggest hurdle in the entire process, and you've cleared it - well done! ![]() Best of luck getting your Medicare & licences sorted. |

Just a small update: I got my visa label put in last Monday. After I left the immigration office, it took me a while to find the Medicare office so I went in there with the letter I received from the immigration guy and a new visa label. I showed those things to the Medicare agent and was enrolled in about 10 minutes. I got a temporary "card" with my number on it (a number on a receipt) and still waiting for my card. The immigration case officer said they'll contact me about the permanent visa a little less than 2 years from when I applied for the visa. That is around June 2010. So in a way, I am happy that they were processing my visa since August 2008. NOW I have to be prepared for the next part which I assume is pretty much giving them stuff from last Monday to show them in June/July 2010? I'm also going to restart school in a few months if things go as planned. ![]() And thanks for the nice messages!

Hi everybody. I thought I'd post a little update on what's going on and see if you have any advice/comments for me. ![]() I flew back from Melbourne to Texas to have a short little trip with my family and friends and was planning to leave right after Christmas. I came here in late September and was planning to work a few cities over so I was looking for temporary work. About a week after I arrived, my father passed away very, very suddenly and I was away and scheduled to be back in my hometown the next day. (He actually told me to come back the day he passed away because he wanted me to do a few things for him and I said I would try... I had plans to come back early the next morning so we could spend some father-son time.) So this is where it gets tricky: I have stayed a really long time to spend time with my mother. I've been here since the day my father passed away (yes, I'm more of a mommy's boy). I feel that she needs to adapt to life without my father and just being by herself and I have booked a ticket back to Australia in a few weeks. That means that I've been gone for the full months of October, November, December, January, February and March. I'm also going to be here for Easter Sunday. If you don't already know, I hold a provisional permanent residence visa good for multiple travel until the next stage is assessed/processed (coming up around May). I don't know if my stay is "overdone" and it will have an effect on the next stage. My partner has been extremely supportive during such a hard time but is looking forward to me getting back too so I can cook, clean, repair, maintain and make him laugh. I'll be bringing the death certificate with me just in case... I get so nervous dealing with immigration when I return to Australia. I do miss being there a lot and will be happy to return to my job too. Does anybody have any advice on my situation? If you do have any feedback, I would appreciate it greatly and thank you in advance!

My sincere sympathy over the loss of your father, and I think you were wonderful to stay and help your mother out as long as you've been able. Your partner is also wonderful to be so supportive! I don't see a problem with the upcoming permanent residency stuff. There is a form that asks if you've been out of the country during the 2 years, and if it's more than 2 months you will have to get another FBI check done. And, if you're expecting your "PR packet" in May, you might want to send your fingerprints to the FBI while you are still over there (to be returned to Melbourne). In another thread someone says they were told that the FBI has a current backlog of 13 weeks! You had a perfectly justified reason for such a long visit, and as long as you and your partner can show that you've maintained your relationship during the time you were away, I think you'll be fine! Thank you very much, Lisa. I had planned to do another FBI check just in case because I don't really care much for my partner's occasional "wait until they ask" attitude. And thanks so much for making me feel a lot better. Pre-departure jitters always get the best of me. |

A bit of an update... sadly not as dramatic as my other ones have been... About two weeks ago I got a letter from immigration for the 2nd stage processing which basically told me to send them a lot of junk: updated statutory declarations, a new form 80 (which I am dreading to fill out), new police checks for Australia (luckily, I have the one from the USA from my long trip in the USA), a checklist and I think that's all. The time frame I have to get it all in is 60 days so I'm at around 45 days and haven't sent in the AFP check (the police check for Australia) and I'll be doing that either today or tomorrow. So this is exciting stuff. Almost done, I hope. That 6 month trip to the USA still lingers over my head but I should be fine and if I have to wait another 6 months because of it, that's fine. I am just looking forward to having the skyscrapers of paperwork out of my way and all the red tape cut so I can get back to class without all the hassle! I hope you all had an awesome July 4th too and as always, thank you for your mountains of support.

Sounds great! Get that mess of stuff sent in, it is SUCH a relief to finally get it submitted and look forward to Permanent Residency! They absolutely don't like if it's not back in the 60 days, so get it there soon. Good luck! Lisa |

It is officially done. I was granted my Interdependent Residency visa on 16 September 2010. I wanted to say a huge thank you for those who have given me tons of support and advice. I really do appreciate it. It's not an easy process and to have a group of supporters around is an absolute godsend. I will be hanging around here so if anybody wants to ask me something, feel free to do so. |
