hehe your whole post made me smile Bronxgirl, it really is cute learning about all those differences with my boy too. I had to introduce him to iced coffee and iced tea. although he wasn't too thrilled when I said that the US and Australia really aren't that different

Jason actually loves pb&j now, but only with the Welches grape jam that Mom sends I, on the other hand, just can't seem to develop a taste for those meat pies.. ugh. |

Pies are soooo yummy. You're missing out! :-) Have you tried a chicken one with creamy sauce? It'd be a lot closer to something like a pot pie. |

I can't even get my husband to look at the two together. He said out of the American things peanutbutter and jelly by far is the most disgusting. Yeah well I countered with vegemite, no one is getting that stuff in me ever again.

Vegemite is the devil. It turned my toast into a salt lick. So gross. Whereas peanut butter and jelly is rich and salty and sweet sticky goodness...does a belly good! Have you clarified with your husband that American jelly is the same as jam in Australia? Down under, jelly is jell-o, and that might be what grosses him out. |

Reading through these forums and thinking about what would make me homesick and soap on the dishes, this comment made me think the taste of aqua zest in my mouth would probably make me super homesick, I remember it being stuck in my teeth after having my mouth washed out. I hope the dish soap doesn't taste like that, I think i might fall over on the floor laughing and/or crying from the memory of it and my dear family who thinks I'm absolutely nuts for going to Oz. I remember when I first told mom about my relationship with A, like any concerned mother she wanted to know all about him, I knew the question was coming "where is he from?" "Australia." long long long long pause. a bit of a stutter, another pause. I moved on to the next topic but even today almost a year and a half later she will get this glassy look in her eyes and say "but...Australia?" I did dishes last night, and I was tempted to not rinse them just to see what all the hubbub was about, but I had to rinse them. |

Agree. But you know, we're living with my MiL whilst our house is being built and she lives in an 20ish year old house with only 1 kitchen sink. We've been here for about 7 months and I don't think she rinses the dishes (I cook, she cleans). I can't taste anything. . . ? |

My partner is from NZ and they don't rinse dishes if they're getting dried right after (which is usually the case in their house) but I notice they'll give a quick rinse if they let them sit in the rack. Never tasted soapy. I don't think our dishes at work get rinsed when they get hand washed and sit in the rack though. |

Every time I put dish soap on the shopping list, my husband reminds me that if I didn't rinse the dishes I wouldn't need to buy it as often.

Lisa, that doesn't even make sense. If you didn't rinse the dishes you wouldn't use as much water, but you'd still use the same amount of dish soap. Or am I missing something? (Which I admit is entirely possible.)

Kim... it's his twisted way of saying there'd still be soap on the dishes so I wouldn't need to add more... I think! eta: did I say he makes sense? ever?

What is the deal with Aussies not rinsing the dishes? I find that really gross but it's not really an issue here since we have a dishwasher. I think it's really funny to mess with my family. I took some pictures at the reptile park of the Koalas sleeping in a tree and the kids petting a kangaroo. I then posted them on facebook and said that they were taken in our backyard. I can't believe how many people believed us and thought it was so cool.

I had some good times coming back to the states from Canada, we told people we left our dogsled at the border, etc. etc. I don't know if the people we encountered were gullible or just plain ignorant, as long as its in good fun. |

worst experience by far not knowing that you have to add water to cordial and that it isnt just juice....everyone got a real kick out of watching my friend and I drink red cordial straight up with a little vodka! |

Oh this brought back so many memories! Thanks for the laugh! My husband thought all the toilets were broken when he came to the states too. And my Aussie friends and husband looked at me strange when I rinsed soap off dishes and told me I was wasting water. Now with the dishwasher it's not an issue but it was for awhile. All I can say is I really wish I would've found this site years ago..it really would have made things so much easier for me...Vi |
