Besides the Tide I also saw Downey, Gain, Bounce, and Dreft there too. This was just after it opened and I don't know if they still carry all of these products. If any were a poor seller I would imagine that they would be quickly discontinued. I too was explaining how we use Bounce to the Aussies who were looking at it and wondering what it is for.

Personally I almost never use my dryer (found for free at the curb) as it makes my place all steamy and linty. It does not have an exhaust hose connection and just vents through the door into the room. The windows need to be open when it is used and this was quite chilly during winter. At 16 + cents per KWH for electricity it is also quite expensive to use it too. I might be more inclined to use it if I had a place outside such as a porch to put it. I line dry outside when I can and if it is damp, cold, or raining I hang my cloths indoors and let my dehumidifier dry them. Before I bought the dehumidifier I sometimes had trouble with dampness, condensation, and even some mold growing on the wall during the winter.
:agree: Jed!
It's (usually) a drier climate here in Perth, and I haven't missed having a dryer, everything dries outdoors in a VERY short while, and when it's rainy in the winter things dry fine indoors. :) And I wouldn't like the lint/dust and humidity.
But, damn, I miss that Tide+Downy smell... :( Just like my older kid, when he moved to college, brought his clothes home to get washed, and when I asked why he doesn't do them HIMSELF, he tried to tell me that when I do them, they smell like *HOME*. I said, "Honey, just buy Tide and Downy, and you'll be right!"
Now I find I really miss it, myself! And am paying lots more for hypoallergenic detergent and fabric softener that doesn't make me itch, because the salty air this close to the ocean makes things itchy/scratchy :(
Ahh well, such is life! ;)
(And glad I know some Melbournites here in Perth that drive over often, and I've convinced them to buy a membership, next trip! :yaay: )

Now......sheowahya - please tell me more about the one day guest pass. I emailed Costco a while back explaining that I was trying to convince dh to buy a membership and asked if there was a way we could go in once just so he could look around, and they said nope. Never mentioned a guest membership. Only that if we get a membership and dh isn't happy we can get a refund. Any idea how much the guest membership costs?
I've taken non-members in to the store with me, primarily Danni. Maybe you could hook up with someone to take your DH in with them?
I have two Costco's within driving distance, the smaller of the two is near a good friend's in Folsom, CA. She was totally blown away, remarking the store and parking lot was bigger than the whole business section of downtown Cootamundra. An exaggeration, but not by much...

As for detergent btw, I used to use Tide, but now use a Kirkland brand and like it a lot. Only downside is it doesn't flow out the spigot very quickly when it's cold. But a cup or two of water added, and agitate to mix, thins it out enough to make a difference.

Hmm, wonder if my US card would be honored in Melbourne?

Well, that's it, then. American culture really is creeping into Australia, one box of Bounce at a time.

Quoting limited to 2 levels deep
Thanks for the tip Natasha - have you heard of www.wineplace.com.au? If so, do you know how they compare to Dan Murphy's? Noticed wineplace's ad in smh and they deliver free if you buy 1/2 dozen or more bottles. Haven't tried them. I notice Dan Murphy's charges a $5 delivery fee. Have you had wine delivered to you? Do you have to be home to sign for it? Since we don't have a car, we've found Woolies is great for delivering the heavy stuff we don't want to lug back to our home with our little wheeled shopping bag. We ordered a 24 pack of Toohey's Extra Dry, along with a bunch of clunky jugs of cleaning supplies and insect barrier/killer and had it all delivered to our home. Quite convenient. You just have to be home during a time range for delivery.
Hi Liz- I haven't heard of that site. To be honest, I've only been to DM's twice. I work for an alcoholic beverages company and I get discounted wine- however, saying that, sadly I noticed at DM's that they sold most of our wine cheaper than it was with my employee discount. But not sure how they compare to wineplace.com.au.

I forgot you don't have a car, which can make it difficult. Neither do I, so when I order wine through work, I keep it under my desk and bring home a couple bottles of a time! Just another way you learn to be creative ;) Free delivery is great though, my company charges $9/case, so that's way better!

I think Elsja uses gray's online, or something like that. Maybe she can chime in with some more advice on how to score cheap wine! :)

They still had the Downy too! And the place was retty busy though it was mid-week, mid-day. Should be good for all of the other cities if they manage to do well here. No reason not to build more!

:headscratch: Now that's odd. You might try calling the store directly. I know from experience that the US stores will allow you to have a look around if you tell the door greeter you're thinking of buying a membership but want to see what it's all about first. You have to show a membership card once you get to the register with your purchases anyway, so it's not like you can sneak through a basketload without one. :)

I have heard that yes, Costco here will honour a USA Costco card ... I have a bunch of friends from my DD's school who are now Costco addicts and I have still yet to go. But I will do so, someday soon - with my card from Costco Seattle! I want to check out the new ice skating place at Docklands, too - am thinking of making a day of it ...

Yeah, they specifically advertise that if you're a Costco member, you can use your card anywhere. That means when we sign up as members here and go back to the states they'll honour it as well.

You can use your Costco card at any Costco in the world. :)

Steph - I don't remember if cardholders are allowed more than one guest, but hubby and I both have Costco memberships and we can take you and your husband there if you want to check the place out.

Other American items to add to the list:

Tide pens
Pumpkin pie (only during the holidays - but boy was it delicious)
Starbucks ground coffee

I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any right now. LOL

My mum has brought both my partner and me in on her card. That's in podunk Oregon though, so who knows what the actual policy is.

I renewed my Costco card in Seattle last Sept and triple verified that it would work in Australia and they said YES. Now, I just need to get to Melbourne with an empty vehicle. LOL

Tide To Go (a/k/a the Tide pen) is also available at USA Foods and they will deliver to your door!!
I was SO thrilled to find that little gem!! My co-workers were in complete AWE when I pulled it out at a work dinner when someone spilled red wine on her white blouse and the stain was gone in seconds!

How on earth can they live without Tide to Go?!?!?!? LOL

as for the guest pass... it works the same way in Melbourne as it does in the States, just go to the customer service desk, and ask for a one day pass, no charge

Cheers,
Marilyn

So here's the most important question (at least in my mind)-Do they still have the $1.50 polish/hot dog combo, chicken bakes, and huge pizza slices for like $2??
