You can use your Costco card at any Costco in the world. :)

Steph - I don't remember if cardholders are allowed more than one guest, but hubby and I both have Costco memberships and we can take you and your husband there if you want to check the place out.

Other American items to add to the list:

Tide pens
Pumpkin pie (only during the holidays - but boy was it delicious)
Starbucks ground coffee

I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any right now. LOL
I was just checking on the costco website and it says up to two guests with you each visit. --at least in the US. I don't have a membership now, but how does the membership price in Oz compare to the $50/yr in the US? I know its not really comparing apples to apples, but I was contemplating getting a membership right before I fly over, the $50/yr is only available to US residents, but if I pay for the card while I am still residing here, I think that should be alright, then i have it for a year and I would like to get the most out of my year. I don't know how they would check that, but still the first year at least would be good.

Pretty comparable: Gold Star Membership is AUD$60

I'm still waiting for an answer the the pp's question about the Hot Dogs and Pizza. I hope they have them since I have really been craving a decent hot dog lately.
Also, does anybody know if they carry the Kirkland brand Dog Food?

OK, I'm so glad that you all want to know about the hot dogs because I have a few words I'd like to share... disgusting! I actually enjoyed a Hebrew National every now and again at Costco in the US (which they later changed to their own Kirkland brand that was also tasty) but the hot dogs here in Melbourne are pork and are nasty. I think that the hot dog & soda combo is $2 or $2.50.

The do carry the chicken bakes and I haven't bought one so I don't remember the price. The pizza is $3 per slice and if you stick with the cheese only it tastes pretty close to what you get in the US. The pepperoni leaves something to be desired and something to heave up later. The sodas are $1.50 and you get unlimited refills. I think I mentioned liking the Lemon Solo soda, so I always get one when we go.

Sorry, I haven't looked for dog food, but if I remember, I will check it out the next time I go.

As for memberhips, I have a US membership and it works just fine here, although they do have to yell for a supervisor everytime I come through. I had the Executive Membership in the US and they do not have those here, so don't count on spending oodles of money and getting any of it back. Geez, I wish that I could get my cash back from my purchases here as everything costs twice as much!

I called to ask about memberhip information and the guy didn't give a lick that I was living in Australia and using a US membership, so I assume that they might just renew your membership every year as usual if you keep a US address. Costco here doesn't send out coupons all the time like they do in the states, however, they did have heaps of coupons for a few weeks in August during their one year anniversary. I did not receive them in the mail because I have a US membership/address, but happened to go in at the right time. SO, if you want to know when they send out coupons you will need a membership here or you need to go in weekly

I'm kind of feeling like the American Costco freak now that I've answered all these questions. I actually don't spend nearly as much here as we did in the US because they don't carry many of the things I once purchased. Did I mention that they had pumpkin pie last week? I can only imagine that if they had it in September then they MUST have it for thanksgiving. I'm crossing my fingers that I can use my last can of Libby's on Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookies instead of pie :p

OMG. The GIGANTIC pumpkin pie. And for $6-7. I have managed to walk by it so far and it's been there every single time I've been there for the last year. Right near the GIANT (I'm talking 12-14") latticed apple pie.

For those in Melbourne who've been to Costco recently: any chance they're stocking Halloween pumpkins? I don't remember them doing so last year, but thought I'd check. Ta!

Costco here in Melb isnt that great. Expensive. Stuff all imported goods (I didnt expect any really).

Dont think its the same as in the US. NOt even close. Mind you, its still a small fraction cheaper than supermarket for staples, but thats about it. The membership cost is worth it

I dunno... when I'm able to get a HUGE bottle of salsa for $14.99 when an itty bitty jar in the grocery store is $5.99 then it seems worth it. Canola oil, mayo, tortilla chips, etc. have all been significantly cheaper as well. For me its a combination of things being cheaper plus American = BONUS! As with anything and anywhere, I shop the deals and don't buy it unless I need it and its inexpensive.

I'm with AmbroseChick on that one... Plus it's the only place to get huge jars of American peanut butter, Monterey Jack cheese, affordable hershey kisses and chocolate sauce, and real mozzerella sticks and poppers! :) The meat and seafood is actually really good too. And I love getting a big bag of mussels for $6. :)

I think the pay off to the pollies for allowing Costco into Australia was for Canberra to get one before Brisbane... because its a pretty odd business decision to make without some outside influence from somewhere.
