I read nine news on the internet and I can remember a man who was.....Well basically having a good time at Nobby's beach in Newcastle pleasuring himself into a Dolmio Pasta Bottle. I still think I may have the e-mail in my old sent box because it turned into a chase with the NSW Police....But this one I think maybe one upped that story. Read: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/1028918/man-strikes-policewoman-with-penis This is better than the drive by shootings in Los Angeles that I am used too... I will post the other one at nobbys beach later once I find it.....I hit my head on the coffee table about a year ago about the incident at nobby's beach! |

I was just watching the news this morning and on the national news was the story of a 2 car accident on some highway somewhere... no fatalities... no injuries... that wouldn't even make the local news where I lived in the US. |

Your right after re-reading this story it was in England I found this in ninemsn.com.au through the shock value of the headline I missed this however here is one that I found interesting which made me think it was a copy cat crime? http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/news/general/man-caught-with-penis-in-pasta-jar/1363831.aspx Well I guess Australia has got its share of nutters...I prefer these idiots than people getting shot or stabbed, or raped....It is funny though. If you dont laugh you will cry!

I just hate how big petty crimes seem to be in Australia...like vandalism, fighting, and low level theft. I hate that my Fiance has to be dropped off at the train station rather than risk leaving his car there and get the hood and windshield stomped in, which happened to his last car that he left there. I hate that I don't feel safe on the trains at night by myself because I know I'm going to get harassed by drunk guys somewhere along the way between Sydney and Newcastle. Maybe I've just lived a sheltered life up til now in Orange County and San Francisco? |

I haven't had that experience here in Queensland... everything seems to be pretty laid back up here. Maybe its a Sydney thing? My husband lived in Sydney years ago and its the only place that he's ever had a car stolen... it was totally stripped out when it was finally found. I used to live in Portland, Oregon and there's no way I would ride on a MAX train or bus after rush hour by myself. The only place my car has ever been vandalized was in Vancouver, BC. I guess no place is perfect?... |

Yeah, you're right, no place is perfect and at least when random drunk people coming home from the pub fight in front of my house I know no one is going to pull a gun!

I've lived most of my life in metro NY and I've never been burgled, etc. My car has been broken into twice in the last year and a half here in Brighton, which is not exactly the roughest part of Melbourne. I'm truly afraid to go on extended holiday and leave the house because virtually everyone we know has had their house broken into at some stage. Petty crime here is rife. |

I think a lot of the violent crimes are alcohol / drug fueled - I'd put some blame on the fact Kids (18-20) are getting wasted at the pubs during a time their hormones are still doing backflips. Never have I heard of so many glassings, fights, etc in the U.S. And then there is the "tagging" culture of Australia that I haven't quite figured out yet either.... To compare cities, certainlly feel safer walking the CBD of Sydney at night than Melbourne. Would also say that the commo housing being in "good" neighborhoods adds to the problem...whereas most the public housing / section 8 stuff in the states is kept far away from the middle class neighborhoods by design or economics. |

Amen to that one! I prefer hearing about a home burglary in Melbourne as a national news item... rather then the daily shootings report from my local news. |

Agreed! Petty theft is irritating and such a hassle, but nowhere near as life shattering as the stuff that makes headlines back in the states. Dana - I can't believe you never got harassed in SF or OC. Lucky girl! I always found SF to be scary at night, and OC is so much more frightening. I definitely feel safer walking the streets of Melbourne CBD than in the financial district of SF. |

The only place (knock on wood) so far that I have had scary incidents is Japan, which is supposed to be one of the safest countries...

Just get yourself some Black Black. You'll be so hyped up on caffeine you won't have time to worry about getting groped on the train. |

It's just a shame there are no vending machines on the trains.

But those statistics are based on how many people actually reported the crime. In some of the middle eastern countries, rape is often ignored. Even worse, sometimes those who report it are publicly humiliated or punished and made to feel as though they deserved to get raped in the first place (i.e. because of how they dress or act). Less people who report = lower recorded statistic. |

There are vending machines on the platforms that will even take your Suica for payment. Makes it WAY too easy to blow through your train budget in 2 days. |
