Just get yourself some Black Black. You'll be so hyped up on caffeine you won't have time to worry about getting groped on the train.
It's just a shame there are no vending machines on the trains.
Love it. Gosh I miss the vending machines. Though they were kind of eye sores, you would find them in random places, with random things in them. It was like Christmas.. walk around a corner and find a vending machine with...? beer, clothes, magazines.. you name it.

*sigh* can you imagine, you'd probably get whipped or stoned. Or as in some countries, one of your male relatives might just kill you for bringing shame on family.

Saudi probably being #1 in that category.

In some countries, like Pakistan, a woman needs four eyewitnesses in order to prosecute.

link. This is all true; shame about the high-school-HTML-class (ca. 1999) layout/background.

Chocopaws-laughing over your comments about the OC being scary :) Unless I was walking through Downtown Santa Ana at night, I never really felt unsafe. I know what you mean about SF and the Financial District, for me while it *feels* unsafe, I've never had an issue and I have had issues in Australia, including in the middle of the day at one of the major Newcastle train stations and not having anyone try and intervene when they saw a young woman on her own clearly being harassed.

So I do agree with everyone on here in saying that I'm sure I *am* safer in Australia, but I don't *feel* safer.

There are vending machines on the platforms that will even take your Suica for payment. Makes it WAY too easy to blow through your train budget in 2 days.
Seems to me like I'll need to consult you for my trip to Tokyo. :D

Dana - I hear you on Santa Ana lol.

I can't believe you were harassed in broad daylight and nobody helped you. :( I've never had that happen to me, but then again I'm in Melbourne and can't say much about anywhere in NSW since I've only been there once...

And there are vending machines ON the trains too, not just the platforms. In Japan that is. Oh, and toilets too.

The gun violence statistics actually show the USA to have less gun crime per capita than OZ: 16,000 + for 20 million people down under compared to 39,000+ for 200 million people. That doesn't make me happy. I lived in NYC for 16 years and unfortunately I am more wary of people here than I was there. I've seen drug users on the trams, people beat up on the train platform. Only once did I see a stabbing in Brooklyn and the police were so on it as it happened at Atlantic Avenue - they caught the guy within a minute of him bolting away from the scene.
Tokyo trains - no big deal. Melbourne trains late in the evening? Quite scary.

Hi jenbrooklyn8, just wondering where you're pulling that statistic from? At least the crime murders with firearms statistic seems to show that you're 10.5x more likely to run into that sort of a situation in the US than in Oz.

US: 9,369 incidents / 300 million people = 3.123 incidents per 100,000 people
AUS: 59 incidents / 20 million people = .295 incidents per 100,000 people

Did I screw that math up?

I only pulled info from there, in response.

I realise this discussion is from a while ago, but I just thought I'd clarify the confusion about the crime stats link posted by blarg. The figures indicate the percentage of homicides committed using guns, not the absolute number in thousands. So according to the source above, 39% of all homicides in the US are gun-related as opposed to 16% in Australia. Not 39,000 vs. 16,000. The page doesn't say anything about absolute numbers.

That makes a lot more sense to me, as 16,000 gun homicides a year works out to 44 a day, and with Melbourne home to about 20% of Australia's 20 million people, that would mean nearly 9 people a day killed with guns in the city. You sure don't hear about that on the news. ;)

If you click on the nation names on the above link, you'll find the figures that ds6540 cited: There were 9,369 murders with firearms in the US in the most recently reported year, and 59 of same in Australia.

Thanks, Kim :goodonya:
I noticed that, too, it's not "per capita" statistics, and that makes a huge difference.

Less people who report = lower recorded statistic.
Almost every woman I've ever dated, and a few female friends, have mentioned being raped, nearly raped, or suffering significant sexual harassment.... It was really quite a shock to me when one day I connected the dots and realized how prevalent it really is. I quite get that no means NO, and just don't understand the mentality behind such acts.

I'd say rape is still vastly under reported everywhere.

Sorry, in my reply I ended up with with two quotes and mangled editing the quoted text which incorrectly attributed it to you.
Probably should have just not said anything.
Sorry if I offended.
