We have Orb weavers in the states too! I had a bunch on the back of my house before I sold it, I liked to watch them build their webs and eat their dinners, better than TV.

If you're going to be in Sydney or are in Sydney, it pays to figure out what funnel webs look like:

(that's on the ground by the way)

Well, unless you like super-mega-kill-you-now venom. In that case, feel free to carry on in gleeful ignorance.
I learned at Toronga zoo that:

Huntsmans think we taste bad and do not want to walk on us as they taste through their legs. That they usually are trying to get away from us when they run.

Funnelweb spiders will die within a few minutes of entering direct sunlight. You are unlikely to see one outside during the day.

This lovely blue tongue lizard was in my kitchen this afternoon - frantic moments ensued with hubby saving the day. That photo is zoomed - I didn't get anywhere near it.

I guess this was my official "Welcome to Australia"

You can click on the photo to see it in its full glory *shudder*

Indy, I didn't see this before. I've had the heebie jeebie's all day from this. omfg.... I'd be on a plane back home I'm afraid.
I worked in my garden earlier and was so afraid I'd scare up something like this....

Vickie, the lizards are a good thing - if you see them, you won't be seeing any snakes ;)

:agree: We have one like that living in our garage, and he does a good job getting rid of the huge snails that eat my garden, too! When we replaced the garage-fridge there was a huge pile of empty snail shells under it! :lurve: I LOVE LIZARDS! :lurve:

no, they wont kill the snakes, but having blue tongues and sleepy lizards in your yard means you wont get snakes. both kinds of lizards are totally harmless, as are the little skinks that'll also be in your yard.
