"I spoke with my supervisors and learned that you cannot be granted permanency following a provisional visa". I've had really good experiences with the DIAC (both here and in the USA) but seriously, they need to get on the same page. I wish I would have gotten angry with her while I was still on the phone with her. I don't believe that whole "permanency cannot follow a provisional visa" thing. aren't spouses in America granted "provisional" 309 visas and then PR after that? Maybe I'm being argumentative and difficult. Sounds like I was right... your CO really IS clueless. I'm really really sorry you were jerked around like that. Did some digging on the DIAC site, and apparently PMVs have completely different rules. While you can be granted PR immediately if you're applying for a spouse/defacto visa, it seems you can't go directly from a PMV to permanent residence, no matter how long you've been in the relationship. A little known fact, I guess... On the bright side, as Lisa says, you got your visa granted (relatively) quickly...

Sydney Area, NSW	If it were me in this situation, I'd call in on the main info line and explain what happened. I'd ask gently what could be done to improve training and/or the system so that this doesn't happen to someone else, as your case officer may be new, but they really need to train them effectively on the visas that they're dealing with.
