Did you have your FBI bg details with you when you lodged, or are they still pending?
 See above, posted the same day he lodged:

Given that, did you have to supply some evidence that your background check was pending? If so, what was it?

Lodged the application today. It was very anticlimactic, lol. The employee took our application and 2,575 of our dollars, and that was basically it. Obviously she is not the one who will be reviewing the application, which makes sense, I just heard stories about being asked questions, etc.

Anyway, the letter she gave me that goes with my Bridging Visa A mentioned that the average processing time is currently 6-9 months. They also stress that that is just a "guide," but I was still a little surprised to see that.

So couple post-lodgement questions:

1. We are planning a trip and cruise in late March, 2011, which is 7 months away. Should I be worried about making these plans with the via timeline possibly running into this period?

2. Sorta the same question, but does anyone know how hard it is to get a Bridging Visa B? We don't really have a substantial reason for this trip - I mean, it's substantial to US as we're meeting my family for the cruise and it's technically a delayed honeymoon, but we're not going to see a sick aunt or something. Any chance this would fly?

I'm going to probably have questions on how hard it will be to get permission to work as my bridging visa will only let me work for 6 months at one employer and I'd like to be extended - but I'll look into that some more first.

I didn't have anything. She asked if I had the receipt, but I didn't. It didn't occur to me until after that I had a copy of the postage receipt (I cent it certified), but I'm not sure if that's what she meant. In any case, it didn't seem like a big deal, she just said to tell the CO when he/she gets in touch.

Right, and possibly by the time your CO contacts you (with your case number), it'll be back and you can get it straight to him/her. :yaay:

Just heard from my parents in the US that my FBI checks (I ordered two) have arrived. I had them sent their thinking that it might speed things up a bit if I didn't have to make the FBI send them internationally. With any luck I should have a check before I hear from my CO.

Anyone know what is the usual time frame to hear from a CO after logging? Tomorrow will be 2 weeks.

bump

Is it normal to not hear from a CO initially for a few weeks?

Is anything at DIAC "normal?"

Yes, it happens. Here in Perth I didn't hear anything for months! And my application was fine, and finally got the visa granted.

Have you gotten your FBI check from your folks yet to give them?
eta: just wondered, as it's nice to have a case number to put on it when you do hand it in.

Not yet - they've been sent and are scheduled to arrive here on the 14th.

I was thinking of trying to call DIAC to see if I can find anything out about a CO after I have the FBI checks, but I probably wouldn't bother if this kind of wait for initial contact is normal.

It probably wouldn't hurt to call, just to enquire if you have a case number yet, because you need to submit a needed document.

Perth had a horrible backlog for over a year, and other people had slow CO's, too, but it's gotten better recently.

I called the general inquiry line in Sydney today, didn't learn anything. The guy I spoke to was nice enough, but he couldn't/wouldn't give me anything other than the "6-8 months" line. He did suggest that I hand in my FBI background check in person rather than post it, which is a good idea. I have a spare copy in the US should anything happen to this one, but I would still greatly prefer to not have one report get lost in the mail or something.

So, I guess I'm just waiting.

Approved!

Got a simple e-mail from my C.O. this past Thursday with an attached approval letter. Actually the whole thing was extremely anticlimactic, lol.

I'll go post a quick timeline thread in the other section, but just FYI:

24/08 - Lodged in person in Adelaide with everything except FBI check.
24/09 - Handed in FBI check in person.
25/10 - Recieved an e-mail notifying me that I had a C.O. and that my application was being reviewed.
09/12 - Approval e-mail/letter received.

Total Time: 111 days

:partydots:

Now I just have to get on my boss about hiring me permanently.

Hi.

Hypothetical question.

As everyone who knows anything about this visa knows, there is a 2 year period between applying for the 820 visa and then being able to apply for the 801 visa (permanent permanent residency).

I'm also aware that when you apply for the 820 visa, you can also apply to bypass the two year waiting period and get granted the 801 visa directly if you meet one of the following criteria:

Quote:

However, you may be granted a permanent visa without having to wait if you can demonstrate one of the following:

•at the time you apply for the visa, you have been in a married or de facto relationship with your partner for three years or more
•at the time you apply, you have been in a married or de facto relationship with your partner for two years or more, and there is a dependent child of your relationship
•your partner was granted a Protection visa or a permanent visa under the humanitarian program and you were in the relationship before the visa was granted and this had been declared to the department at the time.

When I applied, I did not meet any of these criteria and therefore had no reason to ask to bypass the two year waiting period.

Here's the question:

Does anyone know whether you can go back to immigration during the 2 year waiting period if you now meet one of these criteria and if they will consider granting you the 801 visa early?

I hope that was clear. I feel like it was not, lol. Back to work though, lunch break is over.

Thanks as always.

Unfortunately, no, you can't.
We had a child during my 2-yr temp residence period, which (had it happened beforehand) would've qualified me for PR right away. So we asked about it. Nope. Once your 2-yr period begins, you have to serve it out. :(
