I know that with a lot of book clubs, the members will take turns hosting in their homes, so that no one person is burdened for every meeting. Maybe we could take turns having one person from the group "host" each month - either in their home, if they feel comfortable, or else they find a coffee shop or other place for us to meet. I think it would be fun to travel to different parts of the city that I might not go to otherwise, once a month or so.

I don't have a job yet, so not sure what my permanent schedule is, but weeknights are probably be good. How about the rest of you?
Sounds great! Weeknights are good for me and I would love to host it once we have furniture :)

Right now, we would all have to sit in a circle on the floor in my cold living room!

In the meantime though, I like the idea of the "host" finding a coffee house/cafe to host in.

I like the idea of a different member of the group hosting each time. I also like the idea of finding a cafe/coffee shop if hosting in your own home isn't practical for whatever reason.

Weeknights will work well for me as well.

I could host the first meeting - and by host I mean I will choose a cafe or other suitable location in The Rocks for us to meet at. How does everyone feel about choosing "Picnic at Hanging Rock" for the first book? I noticed a couple of people suggested it so I figured it might be a good place to start. At our first meeting we could discuss what books we'd like to put on the list and what to read next.

So - in an effort to get this show on the road - I am going to propose a book and a meeting time. This is not set in stone. Please let me know what you think. Cheers! :)

When: Monday, September 20, 2010 @ 7pm.
Where: Somewhere in The Rocks - cafe/restaurant/pub (TBD)

With the promise of no quizzes and at least one glass of wine, I'm in! The book sounds great as does the date and time. I'll have to run out to get it.

P.S. If anyone has a copy of The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo I would love to borrow it. I was halfway through it and I must have left it in the seat pocket on the flight over!! It will kill me if I have to buy it twice.

Sounds good to me, Samantha. Count me in!

By the way, someone just told me about the site booko.com.au - it will search for the lowest prices on books in Australia.

Thanks for the great site! :goodonya:

Also, I want to let everyone know that I've noticed Penguin Books has a version of "Picnic at Hanging Rock" widely available for $9.95.

I've seen it at major chains like Dymocks and Angus & Robertson. It's also available at Gleebooks if you are more into independent books stores. http://www.gleebooks.com.au

Cheers everyone! :hugs:

Just wanted to let you know about another source for books-
http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/
They ship free world wide and generally have better prices than Aussie book stores.

I'm already in a book club and have used this site to source books that weren't available on Kindle.

I finally got my copy of the book. There are lots of copies of the paperback at the George Street Dymocks, just in case anyone else is a slacker like me. The guy at the counter started raving about what a good book it is, and how he did a project on it in high school.

Getting ready to do some speed reading!

Hey Cristin,

To be honest... I still need to read the book... and this was my idea. Hahaha. It's all good.

Cheers,
Samantha

Lol. Um. I'm still reading it (should still finish it in time though). I gonna go ahead and say even if you found the book horribly boring and couldn't finish it - come along anyway - you can still have a drink and tell us why you didn't like it.

Okay Everyone. So I think I have finally set a place for the meeting. Sorry for the last minuteness of this! I am going to send a PM to everyone who previously showed interest with my mobile #. So we will have a way to contact everyone. If you are interested in coming and haven't yet expressed interest - send me a PM so I can send you my mobile #.

When: Monday, September 20, 2010 @ 7pm.
Where: The Rocks Cafe: 99 George Street, The Rocks.
What to Read: "Picnic at Hanging Rock" by Joan Lindsay

The Rocks Cafe (<---Link Right Here)

This place is BYO wine only with a $10 corkage fee if you'd like to bring anything. I know this is kinda inconvenient but this place DOES NOT take eftpos cards OR split bills. So be sure to stop off at the ATM to get cash if you want to buy something to eat or drink. (I know, I know) Not the most convenient - but I figured we could deal with the inconvenience if we all knew ahead of time.

Cheers!

See everyone tomorrow!

Was good meeting everyone last night, how'd the rest of the night go? Was going to send a group pm so as not to bore everyone else, but couldn't figure out how to do it!

I devoured about another 50 pages when I got home last night! Was much more interesting with the sci fi theory in the back of my head ;)

Looking forward to the next one!

I think a great time was had by all at the first meeting of the Sydneysiders book club! Huge thanks to Samantha for having the idea and organizing us.
Natasha, I don't think you missed too much book talk after you left - we devolved into chit-chat, as was expected!

We agreed that the next book will be: Theft: A Love Story by Peter Carey
There's a little blurb here:
http://www.randomhouse.com.au/books/Default.aspx?Page=Book&ID=9781741664829

Mimi agreed to play hostess next month, so more info about the whens and wheres will be forthcoming.

It was so great to meet everyone. I hope anyone else who wants to join in will be able to next month!

Whhoooops.... I missed that everyone was still talking on here. I had a lot of fun Monday night! So glad the book club was a success.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_of_Hanging_Rock I found this... and apparently Miss McCraw - in addition to falling into the time space continuum also turns into a small crab like creature and crawls through a crack in the boulder. WTF????
